About us
Family Federal Credit Union was founded in 1983 by Father Luis Valbuena, OMI, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Wilmington to serve the financial needs of parishioners and the community. Family FCU provides a safe place to save, borrow at fair rates and learn about finances.
The credit union difference
Like banks, credit unions make car loans, offer checking and savings
accounts, credit cards and more. So is there a real difference? Yes,
and it can be summed up in two words: ownership and purpose.
Ownership
Who owns Family Federal Credit Union? You do — along with your
fellow members. You can see our owners all around you. They’re
your neighbors, co-workers and relatives. Banks, on the other hand,
are tightly held businesses, owned by elite groups of stockholders.
Purpose
Banks operate primarily to enrich their stockholders. Large banks merge
to form larger mega-banks, then they close branches, lay off staff,
raise fees and reduce services so they can increase profit. In contrast,
the purpose of credit unions is to provide low-cost financial services
to their members. Profits are returned to the membership in the form
of higher dividend yields and lower loan rates, and in new services
and technologies which enable us to serve you faster and more efficiently.

Deposits federally insured To $250,000
Your savings are federally protected up to $250,000 by the National
Credit Union Administration, which is backed by the full faith and
credit of the US Government. This federal deposit insurance fund is
equivalent to the FDIC (Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation). When
you see the NCUA logo on our literature, it’s the same as when
banks put the FDIC logo on their literature. Additionally, Individual
Retirement Accounts are federally insured to $250,000, separate from
and in addition to the coverage on your regular accounts.

wellness, with free counseling and educational classes.

and confidential financial counseling service, can help. Certified
counselors are available to answer your personal finance questions.

Free income tax preparation
Get free help completing and filing your tax return through VITA (Volunteer
Income Tax Assistance). Watch for announcements at the beginning
of each year. We also co-sponsor VITA training, so if you’d

How to join
You are eligible to join Family FCU if you are related to a member
or live, work, worship or attend school in Wilmington. Your membership
is valid your entire life, even if you move out of the area. To join,
simply bring in:
- Two forms of ID including one with a photo to our office.
- A one-time membership fee of $5 and an initial deposit of $100
to your new savings account.
Your relatives are eligible too
Once you’re a member of Family FCU, your family becomes eligible
to open their own accounts.
